The Trump administration is reportedly considering an incentive program to increase the birth rate in the United States, including a $5,000 “baby bonus” for every new mom.

According to the New York Post, White House officials are strategizing ways to reverse the country’s declining birth and marriage rates.

The White House is soliciting ideas to persuade women to get married and have more children in order to raise the birthrate.

Policy experts and advocates for growing the birth rate have been meeting with White House aides to come up with plans to convince more women to have babies, four people who have been part of the meetings told the New York Times.

One plan would give a $5,000 incentive to new moms, while another would see that 30% of all Fulbright scholarships be given to applicants who are married or have children.

Another option being considered would have the government fund programs to educate women on their menstrual cycles so they can know when they are ovulating and able to conceive, according to the report.

Birth rates in the US have long been slipping, hitting a new low in 2023 with just under 3.6 million babies born that year — making the typical American family with 2.5 children a thing of the past. In 2023, American families had just under two children on average.

The total number of babies born was also about 76,000 less than 2022 and the lowest one-year tally since 1979.

While the pandemic brought a slight uptick in 2021 to 2022, the trend seems to be headed downward once again.

Additionally, the ages of women giving birth have started to shift as of late, with the birth rate among teens and younger women dropping while more and more women in their 30s and 40s are having babies.

White House officials have not yet indicated what plans, if any, they are looking to push forward.

The National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said there were only 54.5 births for every 1,000 females aged 15 to 44 in 2023, which was the lowest figure on record and 3 percent down from the 2022 birth rate.

The declining birth rate has sparked political discourse with Vice President JD Vance saying on January 24, that he wanted “more babies” being born in the U.S.

Trump administration officials have not indicated if they would support the ideas although advocates are confident that the U.S. president wants to see a “baby boom,” his officials attending events with their children being a strong indication of this, the NYT reported.

In February, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, a father of nine, reportedly signed a memo instructing the Department of Transportation (DOT) to give precedence to “communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average.”

Simone Collins along with her husband, Malcolm Collins, sent the White House draft executive orders, including one that would bestow a “National Medal of Motherhood” to mothers with six or more children. She noted that Trump officials, such as Vance, are often pictured at events with their children which sent out a strong message.
