Multiple Fatalities After Small Plane Crashes In Tennessee

Three people died after a single-engine plane crashed in Tennessee on Saturday morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a Mooney M20TN crashed south of Upper Cumberland Regional Airport in Sparta.

The aircraft crashed roughly one mile from the rural airport, killing an Alabama married couple and their pilot.

Per NBC News:

Dean Selby, the airport’s director, identified the three victims Sunday as Jonathan Braun, the pilot, and Dylan Clay Davis and Kelsie Lynn Davis, a married couple from Alabama.

Selby said the airport heard reports of an aircraft going down at approximately 11:50 a.m. Shortly after, the Memphis Air Traffic Control Center called the airport to say it had lost communication and contact with an aircraft.

The plane departed from Alabama and was on its descent into the airport when it crashed, Selby said.

Emergency management and fire and rescue workers, along with volunteers, looked for the crash site and were able to find it after the airport sent a plane up to search from the air, the director said.

Fox News reports:

In a statement, the FAA said it will investigate. The NTSB is taking the lead.

The crash comes just days after a famed stunt pilot died while attempting to land at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Rob Holland, the pilot, was the only person on board and died after crashing into the dirt near the taxiway just after 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to NTSB air safety investigator Dan Boggs.

Holland was attempting a routine landing when the tragedy occurred, and was not performing any stunts, Boggs said.

Officials confirmed Holland was in touch with air traffic controllers prior to the crash.

The airfield was closed at the time and military operations were not impacted.
