Per USA TODAY:
In a post on X, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka referenced the escaped detainees while criticizing the conditions inside the detention facility.
“This entire situation lacks sufficient oversight of every basic detail – including local zoning laws and fundamental constitutional rights,” Baraka said. “We must put an end to this chaos and not allow this operation to continue unchecked.”
ADVERTISEMENTFederal immigration agents arrested Baraka on May 9 and charged him with trespassing when he went to visit Delaney Hall. The charge was later dropped.
“I didn’t go there to break any laws, I didn’t break any laws,” Baraka said at the time of the incident. “I was there as the mayor of the city, exercising my right and duty as an elected official.”

Gothamist reports:
The Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey is evacuating all detainees and may face closure after four people escaped Thursday night, according to federal officials who toured the site on Friday.
U.S. Sen. Andy Kim and Rep. Robert Menendez visited the facility and spoke with site leaders in the wake of Thursday evening’s incident – an uprising that advocates and attorneys say was sparked by inadequate food and inhumane conditions. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed Friday that four detainees had escaped, and said multiple agencies were assisting with the search.
Kim said the center is undergoing a “major security review” to assess the safety of the site, after detainees in one unit broke through an exterior wall and escaped into an ICE parking lot. He said the wall was made of drywall and a mesh interior. “That doesn’t sound secure to anybody,” Kim quipped.
ADVERTISEMENT“It shows just how shoddy construction was here — what happens when we’re paying for billions of dollars of for-profit prisons that are skirting the responsibilities that they have and trying to pocket as much of that money as possible,” said Kim, a staunch opponent of the detention center.
Delaney Hall was recently reopened as a private prison contracted by DHS to be an immigrant detention facility. It has been the site of ongoing protests and was where Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver were arrested last month after trying to tour the facility. The site now has become a focal point of the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policy and its closure would be a significant victory for Trump critics and local leaders.
