Three House Democrats requested to be removed as co-sponsors from the resolution to impeach President Trump.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) introduced the impeachment articles against Trump.

Reps. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Robin Kelly (D-IL), and Jerry Nadler (D-NY) no longer wish to be co-sponsors on the seven articles of impeachment.

From The Hill:

Spokespeople for Kelly and Mfume said the lawmakers initially signed on to the effort because they assumed it had been reviewed by leadership. When they learned it was not, they asked for their names to be removed.

“Congressman Mfume removed himself as a cosponsor from H. Res. 353 because he was made aware it was not cleared by Democratic leadership and not fully vetted legally — and he preferred to err on the side of caution,” a spokesperson for the Mfume said.

“The Congresswoman was under the impression that the resolution was drafted and reviewed by both the House Judiciary Committee and Leadership when she originally signed on during a vote series on the floor,” a spokesperson for the Kelly echoed.

Nadler’s office did not respond to several requests for comment.

There is now just one co-sponsor of the impeachment resolution — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) — who signed on to the measure Tuesday. Thanedar, however, is not deterred: In a statement to The Hill on Wednesday, he doubled down on his effort.

Per Newsweek:

Representative Pete Aguilar, a California Democrat who serves as chair of the House Democratic Caucus, told reporters Democrats aren't eyeing impeachment against Trump at this point on Tuesday, just one day after Thanedar introduced his articles of impeachment.

"Impeachment is, at times, a tool that can be used. This president is no stranger to that. He's been impeached twice. But we don't have any confidence that House and Senate Republicans would do their jobs, and so this is not an exercise that we're willing to undertake."

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, three House Democrats—Representatives Robin Kelly of Illinois, Kweisi Mfume of Maryland and Jerry Nadler of New York—withdrew support from the impeachment articles, reported The Hill.

Kelly and Mfume did so after learning the articles had not been reviewed by party leadership, the publication reported.

Only one Democrat, Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, remained a cosponsor on the articles of impeachment as of Wednesday afternoon.

Representative Al Green, a Texas Democrat, has said he plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump. He was the first Democrat to introduce impeachment articles against Trump during his first term in office.
