Horrifying Landing Causes Wheel To Break Off Commercial Aircraft

A Frontier Airlines flight traveling to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, panicked passengers after one of the plane’s wheels broke off during a vicious landing.

Passengers called the flight a “horrific experience” and feared it could be the end.

“Frontier Airlines A321-271NX damaged its landing gear after a hard landing at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, Puerto Rico,” Breaking Aviation News & Videos wrote.

“The crew executed a go-around and entered a hold until they performed a low pass so ATC could observe the condition of the undercarriage from the control tower. The aircraft landed safely 40 minutes later and is still on the ground in SJU,” it added.

“During the go-around debris hit the aircraft’s left engine causing streaks of flames for several seconds,” Breaking Aviation News & Videos added.

“The airport closed both its primary runways, warning inbound aircraft about debris on the runways. Several incoming flights were put into holding patterns, with two flights diverted back to Fort Lauderdale and three to diverted to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Runway 08 was reopened after landing, while runway 10 remained closed for some more time,” it continued.

From the New York Post:

Frontier Flight 5306 was on final approach to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when the 228-passenger plane touched down at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport before quickly climbing back up on April 15.

During the first landing attempt, the Airbus A321 suffered a “mechanical problem” resulting in one of the wheels tearing off the front landing gear, Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia reported.

“We were landing and the landing was very bad, aggressive and at a high speed, this caused one of the tires on the front of the plane to break and catch fire,” Melani Gonzalez Wharton wrote on Facebook.

Wharton had traveled to Florida with her husband and their two sons, ages 3 and 6, to visit the theme parks in the area.

The family didn’t expect their return trip from vacation to turn into a near-death experience.

“For a few minutes I thought it was the end of our story here on earth,” Wharton wrote on Facebook, with a video of passengers deboarding the plane.

The mother of two captured the view out the window from her seat, which showed an orange glow under the plane as streaks of smoke rushed past the window.

Debris from the damaged gear got sucked into the engine, causing it to smoke, but no engine failure was reported.

Fox News reports:

Flight investigator Luis Irizarry told Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV that it appeared the flight’s co-pilot, who is young, was in command at the time of the incident before the quick-thinking captain took over to safely land.

Wharton wrote on Facebook that “the reality is that we were flying in the hands of inexperts,” referring to the young co-pilot.

Frontier Airlines told Fox News Digital in an emailed statement that Flight 3506 from Orlando to San Juan “experienced a hard landing upon arrival.”

“The aircraft landed safely and there were no injuries to the passengers or crew,” the statement said. “The incident is under investigation.”
