Four children are dead after a car plowed through an after-school center in Chatham, Illinois.

The vehicle struck one side of the building and came out the other side, running over several people in the process.

At this time, there are four confirmed deaths — all between the ages of 4 and 18. Several other victims have been hospitalized.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The driver of the car was not injured and has been taken into custody.

Reportedly, it is suspected that the unidentified driver was driving under the influence.

Three victims were standing outside the building and one was inside

Several others were rushed to the hospital, including one who was airlifted

The car crashed through the building and came out the other side

The driver was uninjured but taken to the hospital for evaluation and was seen in handcuffs

The cause of the crash is still under investigation

𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐎𝐈𝐒 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐇 𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐌 𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐏

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐌 –The Illinois State Police (ISP), working with the Chatham Police Department, is investigating a fatal crash at an after school camp. ​ At approximately 3:20 p.m. today, officers responded to the YNOT After School Camp, located at 301 Breckenridge Rd. in Chatham where a vehicle drove into the east side of the building. ​ The vehicle struck multiple people outside of the building before continuing through the building. ​ The vehicle also struck multiple people inside building before exiting through the west wall of the structure. ​

At this time, we can confirm four fatalities believed to be between the ages of 4-18 years. ​ Three individuals were struck outside the building and one inside. ​ Several additional individuals have been transferred to local area hospitals by ambulance and one by a life flight helicopter.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was uninjured and transported to an area hospital for evaluation. ​ ​

Traffic on Walnut St. between Park St. and Gordon Drive will remain closed until further notice. ​ ​This is an active investigation and no additional information is available. ​ ISP will release additional information when available.

Four people, all of them children or teenagers, were killed and several others were injured on Monday when a car crashed through an after-school center in Chatham, Ill., a village just south of Springfield, the State Police said.

The victims are believed to be 18 years and younger, the Illinois State Police Department said in a news release.

The car struck three of the victims outside the building and the other inside it, the police said. Several others were taken to the hospital, and at least one person was airlifted, the authorities said.

There was no additional information on the injuries on Monday evening or the ages of those injured, said Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police.

The driver, who has not been identified, was not injured and was undergoing an evaluation at the hospital Monday evening, the State Police said. No one else was in the vehicle, the police said.

Officers with the Chatham Police Department, Chatham Fire Department and other agencies responded to a call Monday afternoon of a vehicle driving into Y.N.O.T. After School Camp, the State Police said.

According to the police, the driver drove into the east side of the building, striking multiple people outside and then continued driving through the building, hitting more people inside before exiting through to the west side.
